PLEASE TOUCH
Children learn through directly interacting with the world around them. In a society where stimuli is increasingly channeled through observation; it is essential that the direct tactile sensation is harnessed. Sights and sounds are captured constantly, but touching is severely underutilized in our educational systems for our youth.
Our children are surrounded by chances to look and listen, but very few opportunities to touch. Many are instructed throughout their days to refrain from handling objects and the restrictions of “don’t touch!” are plastered around them. Such caution is emphasized especially with the unfamiliar domains of our world – the wildlife. The danger of depriving sensory integration is more hazardous than the risk than that of handling our nature.
When John Bonnett Wexo created the best-selling Zoobooks Series of children’s books, he sought to release the learning possibilities in every page. But he realized, there is no substitute, provided through a book that can provide the important sensation of physically feeling subjects. The contours and textures that define our wildlife diversity can only be attained through the power of touch. Through an unrestricted opportunity to handle the surfaces of nature around us, we are able to forge direct, empowering learning experiences.
John Bonnett Wexo created a special sculpture to welcome children; inviting the exploration of animals to their heart’s content, and the hunger of their brilliant minds. Titled “Discovering Our Wild World”, the sculpture is teaming with over 90 animals and selections of nature. Unparalleled learning is enabled in a safe, universally accommodating manner, through the ability to touch. The vivid the details of hair and scales; the textures trees and horn – all are immediately absorbed through the interaction.
Cast in bronze, "Discovering Our Wild World" is a limited edition work of art that can be installed indoors or outdoors. "Discovering Our Wild World"is now available to individuals or foundations dedicated to promoting wildlife education and the arts for children.
